At Genuine Georgia, we have had the privilege of showcasing some of the most talented artists in the state, and for the past eight years, we’ve been honored to feature the beautiful folk art of Ms. Shirley A. Hunter. Now, as she steps into retirement, we invite you to join us in celebrating her incredible career and legacy on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29.

Although Ms. Hunter won’t be able to attend in person, she has graciously requested that we offer 15% off her paintings during this special event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Genuine Georgia. This is a rare opportunity to own one of her cherished pieces before they are gone!

A Lifetime of Memories Captured in Art

Shirley A. Hunter’s paintings are more than just artwork—they are windows into the past. Her folk art beautifully captures Southern and Gullah life, preserving traditions and everyday moments that might otherwise be forgotten.

“Folk art has always been very special to me because the days and events of the past are quickly becoming forgotten,” Ms. Hunter reflects. “Family life in all its dimensions is the theme that I try to portray throughout my paintings. Hear the laughter, feel the splash of water, smell the flowers—enjoy my memories of yesterday.”

Born in Panama City, Florida, Shirley moved to New York City at the age of nine. However, her heart has always been with the coastal islands of Georgia, where she later settled in Brunswick and St. Simons. Inspired by the love and warmth of her grandparents, she infused her art with the essence of family, creating heartwarming scenes that resonate deeply with those who view them.

“Folk Art with a Twist”

A self-taught artist, Shirley has always embraced learning, drawing inspiration from fellow artists, and even her own granddaughters. Her unique style—fondly known as “Folk Art with a Twist”—naturally incorporates a three-dimensional quality that brings her paintings to life.

“Painting is fun, and I will miss it, but it is time,” she says.

While her artistic journey may be coming to an end, her work will continue to inspire and bring joy to homes near and far.
